After weeks of outlandish boasts, the time has finally arrived and several of Guyana’s top boxers will have to put up or shut up when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) stages ‘Battle of the Contenders’ at the Cliff Anderson Sports all (CASH), Saturday. The need for corporate intervention for these promotions cannot be overemphasized and yesterday morning, Furniture giants, Courts Inc acquiesced to a request by the organizers of the card and donated more than $300,000 to alleviate the huge expenses associated with the organizing of the card.
The donation is also in keeping with Courts’ service to the Guyanese society since its inauguration 21 years ago and the management is giving back to a loyal Guyana. Just one week ago, the executives of the Lusignan Golf Course benefitted when Courts sponsored their one day
Golf tournament and now the furniture giants are throwing their weight behind the GBBC.
Public Relations Officer (Courts), Roberta Ferguson was joined by Marketing Manager, Pernell Cummings and handed over a cheque valued over $300,000 to President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool who was accompanied by another Board member, Howard Cox.
Mr. Cummings endorsed the card and said that Courts is always eager to render support to the local sports community. He reminded of the close ties with the boxing community and the input of his organization towards the development of the sport. His words were echoed by PRO, Roberta Ferguson, who also expressed delight to support the impending card.
Mr. Cox expressed gratitude to his benefactor and noted that Courts has never wavered from its corporate obligations. He reminded of the furniture giant’s input in the Guyana Fight Night as well as other initiatives of the GBBC.
Meanwhile, the Jamaican boxers, Sakima Mullings and Russell Kamal are expected to arrive in Guyana today for their respective engagements. Mullings tackles local middleweight champion, Derek Richmond in an 8 round catchweight bout, while Winston Pompey will battle Mullings’ countryman, Russell Kamal in a potential thriller.
Much action is also anticipated in the bantamweight encounter between CABOFE champion, Dexter Marques and Richard Williamson in their return clash with the latter pugilist vowing to reverse his fortunes, while Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore will match punches with Mark Murray in another 6 rounds catchweight scrap.
Local jnr/lightweight champion, Dexter Gonsalves, was to have fought Iwan Azore but the latter pugilist incurred an injury to his hand during training sessions and the fight had to be cancelled. Not one to allow an opportunity to slip him by and already in training, Mark Austin grabbed the chance to fill the breach with both hands. He said that those very hands will dish out a severe beating to Gonsalves.
Gonsalves is not a talkative boxer but he possesses destructive punching power, exhibited in his last bout with Lake and over the past weeks has been intensely honing his skills at the Forgotten Youth Foundation Boxing Gym in James Street Albouystown. With such determination and bravado exhibited by both pugilists fans would want to grab a ringside seat so as to witness every jab; every straight right; every left hook. Admission for such a seat is only $2000 with those preferring seats in the stand beings asked to contribute a small fee of $1000.
It’s a ‘don’t you dare miss it affair’ and fans are asked to be seated early to facilitate a prompt start at 20:00hrs.
