It was set to be a clash between the rampaging New Amsterdam Warriors and the roving East Canje Knights, however, in the end it was the New Amsterdam Warriors Basketball club that were able to book their place in the final of the Legend Classic Basketball competition when they defeated the East Canje Knights 59-46 in their semi final clash.
The seasoned Warriors seemed more prepared and ready for battle against the younger Knights line up. Using their experience the Warriors jumped out to a quick start and never looked back. They led 13-04 at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors led the Knights by 13 point at the end of the first half as they took the half time break at 33-20.
The Knights seemed rejuvenated after the break and made a gallant effort to close the gap as they had a good third sessions which ended at 39-30 in favour of the Warriors.
However in the fourth session the Warriors were back to their best as they poured in some 20 points to the Knights 16 for the 59-46 victory and a spot in the finals.
Leading the Warriors charge was Randy Caesar with 16 points and he was supported by Leroy Edwards 11, Edmond Semple 09 and Kevin Thom with 08.
For the Knights, Damion Hunte led with 14 points with support coming from Kevin Emmanuel with 12, Odwin Cort 10 and Steve Roopnarine with 08. The Warriors won in Group B, while the Knights were the runner up team in group A.
The Warriors will now await the winner of the other semifinal between Fyrish Black Sharks and Ithaca Hardliners which is slated for this Sunday at the Ithaca Basketball Court.
The Hardliners were gifted a spot in the semifinals after Smythfield Rockers were disciplined for sportsman like behaviour.
The competition is being sponsored by Ponai’s Pharmacy, A. Ally and Sons and Nand Persaud Group of companies. The coordinator is Vibert Garrett. (Samuel Whyte)
