Mushfiqur Rahim hit his third century yesterday before he was last out to ensure the West Indies had to bat a second time needing 13 to win, which they reached 14 without loss in 2.4 overs to win the first Dhaka Cricket Test by 10 wickets at the Arnos Vale ground with over two sessions to spare to head into Saturday’s second and final Test in St Lucia with a 1-nil lead.
At 107-4 on the fourth morning chasing 302 to avoid an innings defeat Bangladesh seemed to be heading for an innings loss inside four days before Mahmudullah and Rahim fashioned a fighting 133-run partnership to take the game in the final day yesterday as the visitors resumed the final day on 256-5 still 46 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat.
Rahim batted for 307 minutes, faced 243 balls and stroked 15 fours and a six in well constructed 166 before he last dismissed, caught on the mid-wicket boundary off Jerome Taylor to leave Bangladesh all out for 314. Kemar took 4-64 from 22 overs, while Shannon Gabriel (2-25 from 17 overs) and Suleiman Benn (2-44 from 28 overs) supported with the ball for the hosts.
The diminutive Rahim, who has a double century against Sri Lanka, began the final day on 70 and looked rock solid from the start and picked up easy singles as Jerome Taylor strangely opted to bowl on leg stump line.
This ploy by Taylor forced Skipper Denesh Ramdin to move the gully to a short mid wicket but then Taylor got one to leave the diminutive Rahim which he edged to Chris Gayle at second slip only to be dropped for the second time in his innings by the Jamaican at 75 and his team 268-5.
The pint size Rahim, not much taller than the stumps, fought fire with fire and took three boundaries in an over from Taylor, cutting him gloriously for four, driving majestically through cover a ball which was pitched up before flicking him elegantly when he over compensated and strayed into his pads.
Rahim gained in confidence as his innings progressed and took most of the strike especially after overnight batsman Nasir was dismissed by Roach for 19 at 279-6 and Shuvagata Hom was trapped LBW to the Barbadian for a duck at 291-7.
Rahim soon found himself running out of partners as Gabriel, the impressive bowler on show yesterday despite not getting more wickets, made inroads. The powerfully built Trinidadian bowled with genuine pace on the slow track in sweltering heat and soon bowled Taijul for a duck off his body as the left-hander showed no desire to get behind the ball to leave Bangladesh on 291-8.
Rubel (0) was beaten for pace and bowled by the hostile Gabriel one run later with 10 runs still required to make the West Indies bat again, but Rahim, who finished unbeaten on 48 in the first innings, soon got to his third Test century and along with last man Al Amin, who was dropped by Taylor off Gabriel before he had scored when he got himself into a tangle to a bouncer and spooned the offering to mid on, frustrated the home team for 38 minutes with a last wicket stand worth 22 runs to insure the West Indies had to bat again.
Man-of-the-Match Kraigg Braithwaite played an exquisite extra cover drive for a boundary off left-arm spinner Taijul to remain unbeaten on four, while Gayle who edged a lively Al Amin past the slip cordon for four before ending the contest in style with a thunderous on-driven boundary in Al Amin’s second over, finished on nine to give the West Indies their seventh win in ten matches against Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s only two wins against the West Indies were achieved here at this ground and in Grenada on their last tour to the Caribbean five years ago but then those victories were against a third string side and despite their spirited fight back in here, they now head to St Lucia hard pressed to level the series.
