The Victory Valley Royals reigned supreme over the Half Mile Bulls to take their 20th Anniversary Basketball championship 73-54 thus claiming the top prize of $70,000 which was put up by their former national women’s coach and founder Linden Alphonso as the Amelia’s ward jets took the third place from kings with a 46-43 win.
Royals entered the final having taken care of the third ranked Jets on Saturday night, while the Bulls, rated number five, shocked Kings as Terron Welch raked in 40 points in the 76-46 demolition triumph.
However, it all boiled down to the final where the third ranked Royals were never going to entertain their opponents as they took control early to lead 14-12 when the first quarter expired.
By half time Royals were leading 40-32 and with the balanced scoring proving too much for the Bulls to stop, it was a 65-42 score going into the final quarter.
Bulls relied too much on their leading scorer Terron Welch, the junior national player, as the Royals placed their hopes on the reliable scorers with Chris Williams netting 17 points to be the final’s Most Valuable Player, with former junior national guard Marlon Pollydore returning to competitive basketball and getting 15, while Orlando Glasgow netted 14 and former national forward Alwyn Wilson adding 10.
Welch was able to score 23 points to be the game’s leading scorer but none other player from the Bulls’ camp registered a double figure score as Kevin Easton netted eight, Dennis Niles seven and Travin Dryden and Jason Blair six apiece.
