An early morning freak accident has left a father of two nursing first degree burns to almost his entire body at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC).
Medical officials say that the victim, Emanuel Ramdoo’s condition is very critical.
Ramdoo, a cane cutter and father of two, was reportedly set ablaze as he attempted to light a kerosene stove.
Neighbours recalled observing heavy smoke emanating from the Patentia Squatting Area residence of the 34-year-old man early yesterday morning.
The man was at home alone, when neighbours forcefully entered his one bedroom apartment in an effort to rescue him.
The public spirited neighbours said that upon entering the house, they discovered that Ramdoo had already turned into a human torch and their efforts could not have prevented him from suffering the severe burns he received.
They said that Ramdoo was lying on the floor, engulfed in flames, with his stove overturned next to him. The neighbours said that upon seeing this, they “drenched him with buckets of trench water.”
Ramdoo’s mother, Gita Lakeram said that his two daughters were spending time at her house nearby, while their father was at home cooking for them.
She said that her son was immediately rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital for treatment, after neighbours summoned an ambulance.
The woman said that on their way to the hospital, her son told her that “he was trying to light the stove, when he jammed it and it toppled over, burning him.”
However, residents of the area have claimed otherwise.
Neighbours said that at the time of the incident, the cane-cutter was still “hung over.” He had been consuming alcohol at a wedding celebration the previous night.
The residents claimed that Ramdoo was suffering from “severe depression”, owing to domestic problems with his wife.
The couple reportedly separated three years ago but residents claimed that the man would usually cry excessively about his failed marriage and display suicidal behaviour whenever he consumed alcohol.
It was while inspecting the home that neighbours discovered Ramdoo’s bed was completely burnt.
This led them to believe that the canecutter had set himself alight in the bedroom and then stumbled outside into the kitchen area.
However, Ramdoo’s mother denied the claims.
She said that that her son would not attempt suicide, since the relationship with his wife ended “a long time” ago. The woman is hopeful that her son would survive the ordeal.
