The many spectators that graced the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) on Saturday night last to witness the T20 match dubbed ‘Cricket for Unity’ were treated to exciting action as Kaieteur Thunders overcame Roraima Strikers by four runs.
Kaieteur Thunders batted first and posted 178-5 to which Roraima Strikers replied with 174-9.
Thunders were put on the back foot early when Anthony Rigby (00) was run out in the first over, bowled by APNU Parliamentarian James Bond, but former national wicketkeeper/batsman Sheik Mohamed and skipper Orin Forde repaired the early damage with a second wicket stand of 86. Forde was in a no nonsense mood, punishing anything wayward. He smashed eight fours and one six and faced 27 balls before he was neatly stumped by Ravindra Seeram off Clyde Butts for 44 with the score on 88.
Butts a former West Indies off spinner, then sent back Mohamed for 25 (4×4). Attorney-at-Law Sanjeev Datadin (05) was soon taken at long on before Alfred Mentore and David Harper added a robust 55 for the fifth wicket to resurrect the innings. Mentore, president of DCC, retired after he had scored 31 (2×4,2×6) while Harper made 16. Lennox Cush, the only bowler with two hat-tricks in this version of the game, hit a vigorous 17 (1×4,2×6) in the closing stages. Butts was the pick of the bowlers with 2-4 off two overs, while there was a wicket each for Charles Ramson Jnr, Bond and Esaun Crandon.
Crandon and Aaron Fraser gave Roraima Strikers a bright start with an opening stand of 39. Crandon hit new ball bowlers Colin Stuart and Reon King for maximums, while Fraser (05) got his first and only boundary off Cush, but Cush got the breakthrough when he trapped him leg before in the seventh over. Cush then removed Crandon, caught by King for 23 and Seeram (05) leaving the score on 45-3. Ramson smashed Tony Najab for a maximum, but was soon taken by Cush on the long off boundary off the said bowler for 13.
Andre Percival, who led Guyana to three consecutive regional U-19 titles, and current Chairman of the Guyana Cricket Board Senior Selection committee Rayon Griffith, added 61 for the fifth to keep their team in the hunt. Griffith flicked Forde for six and deposited Najab for another. Percival did not go unnoticed; he smashed Forde for four and over long on for six. Cush was reintroduced and the move brought immediate success when he uprooted the stumps of Percival for 24 at 129-5.
Griffith continued to play his shots, taking boundaries off Harper and King as he reached his half century off 23 balls. He eventually retired for 57 (8x42x6). The Strikers then lost Butts (05) before organizer Dexter Garnett retired on five. Bond and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Sports Ministry, Steve Ninvalle had to score 11 off the final over which was delivered by Datadin who only conceded six. Ninvalle ended unbeaten on three and Bond on one not out.
Cush grabbed 4-8 to take the Best Bowler trophy, while Najab, Forde and Datadin had one each. Griffith received the most outstanding batsman award, while Members of both sides were presented with Cricket for Unity medallions; Kaieteur Thunders collected the Unity Trophy.
