The investigation into the death of Eldon Sampson, a Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD) resident, who died at the hands of an angry mob on August 29, last, when he allegedly snatched a teacher’s bag, is still ongoing.
This was disclosed by the Guyana Police Force’s ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken, during an interview yesterday.
The Commander said that though people are not coming forward to identify the person (s) who had allegedly beaten Sampson to death, the force is doing their investigation to ensure there is some closure to this matter. He said that by virtue of the law, the police have the authority to investigate and place members who would have committed an act of injustice to another before the court.
According to the Commander, his team will not sit back idly and allow persons to take the law into their own hands.
“We have a criminal justice system, so we will not allow members of the public to take things in their own hands. It is easier for them to call us and let us deal with the matter,” the Commander revealed.
According to information received, Sampson, who was released from prison six weeks before he was killed, robbed a teacher at Samatta Point, Kaneville, EBD, and escaped.
Samatta Point is a community that lies between Kaneville and Grove, about nine miles from the city.
In a release, police had said that they found the Craig resident sometime around 10:45hrs on August 29, last with multiple injuries on the roadway.
“A bag containing $50,000; a cell phone and a laptop computer that were reported stolen earlier from a female resident were recovered by the police, along with a bicycle and a knife.”
At the scene, residents said that the female teacher was walking on the roadway when she was approached by Sampson, who reportedly fell off his bike in his haste to get at her. He brandished a knife and managed to grab the bag, but the teacher’s shouts for help alerted residents of Back Street, Grove who quickly gave chase. Some were reportedly armed with pieces of wood.
Sampson reportedly dropped his bike and, still clutching the woman’s bag, led the crowd in a chase along a dead-end alleyway. He was quickly cornered. The angry crowd surrounded him and reportedly rained blows for several minutes.
The Grove/Kaneville/Samatta Point area has been a troublesome one for police, with daily reports of robberies.
