Tears were shed on Thursday at the Watooka Guest House as the Linden Hospital Complex bid farewell to Drs. Mohamed and Ghani.
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the institution Mortimer Mingo in his feature address said, that while he doesn’t relish the idea of saying farewell to doctors, the two medical practitioners were leaving for the right reasons. “We will never stand in the way of anyone who is seeking to improve their skills and knowledge, and what is unique is that they are husband and wife and collectively they have given the people of Linden and the Region eight years of service.”
According to the Chairman, he hasn’t had much interaction with Dr. Ghani who specializes in Internal Medicine but he knew she did her work very effectively and efficiently.
He was more vocal in his praises for Dr. Mohamed. He noted that when Medical Superintendent Dr. Farouk Riyasat proceeded on vacation and pre retirement leave, Dr. Mohamed was pitch forked into functioning in that capacity.
“He (Dr. Mohamed) is a go- getter; he stuck to his task admirably. He worked around the clock under many conditions to ensure patients are comfortable.”
Mr. Mingo expressed gratitude to the duo on behalf of the Board of Directors, the staff and the residents of Linden. He also encouraged the young doctors at the institution to pick up the mantle and rise to the challenges.
Chief Executive Officer (ag) Mr. Trevor Vangenderen also lauded the two doctors. “From the time I saw them I knew that they had come to work and they haven’t failed me.” Mr. Vangenderen said both doctors have been very straightforward and honest in giving their opinions of the staff and the hospital and in saying the way they think things should go.
“They have a heart for the Linden Hospital Complex and the people of Region Ten. They thought about their departure and what they needed to do to ensure the plans have been accomplished. We support any employee who wants to further their education. As they leave we will receive ten new doctors but it would take time for them to fill the gap.” The CEO noted that there are more doctors at the hospital now than when he first joined the staff over thirty years ago. He said that Linden has embraced Drs. Mohamed and Ghani adding that the two doctors have not been selfish with their knowledge.
In their response Dr. Ghani thanked the staff and Board of Directors for their support and assured that she will still be available to render advice and continue to assist in any way possible.
Dr. Mohamed, who was more vocal, said that initially when he and his wife were called for a meeting to be placed at a health facility, they related that they didn’t want to work at a health centre because they didn’t believe they would be able to use their expertise properly.
When he came to Linden four years ago only five doctors were there and he recalled his first night. “We heard a vehicle blowing in the compound and we were afraid because we didn’t know what it was, but when I looked I saw it was the hospital bus brought a note for Dr Ghani. Apparently, it was the custom then for the bus to turn up with a note and take you to the hospital, but we got over that. We did it all, in the good times, the bad times and in the struggle.”
Dr. Mohamed noted that it is not easy finding a comfortable work environment but they found it at the Linden Hospital Complex. “We worked because we wanted to make a difference in the lives of the people in Linden and Region Ten as a whole.”
He said at first patients were not open, but “A doctor or any staff has to come to the level of a patient and understand what they are going through and make them comfortable.”
He too promised that his service and advice is just a phone call away, as he thanked the hospital staff for their support.
Also in attendance at the event were members of staff of the hospital complex including doctors, nurses, and members of the auxiliary staff.
