Assurance has been given by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) that efforts will be sustained to ensure that the service offered by teachers is not without due reward. At least this is according to a statement issued by General Secretary of the Union, Coretta McDonald, who said that “we will continue to diligently struggle to ensure that you our members are appropriately compensated for the noble task you perform.”
In fact McDonald has vowed that the Union will continue its efforts to work assiduously with the relevant authorities to resolve a number of issues affecting teachers. Among the issues she listed are the Housing Revolving Project, Debunching, issuing of Duty Free concessions, especially for those Head teachers who have been waiting for quite some time, and a solution to the hiccups at the Cyril Potter College of Education.
“Let me urge you our members, to continue to stand strong and firm behind your Union,” said McDonald in her statement which was intended to serve as a welcome message to teachers at the start of the new academic year. The new academic year for the country’s public schools commenced on Monday.
“Now that the vacation is over, it is hoped that both teachers and pupils/students would have had a well-deserved rest and they are now ready to assume to the challenges of not just another term but a brand new Academic year,” said McDonald as she, on behalf of the Union extended best wishes for a productive year.
Taking into consideration all the changes that are taking place in the education arena and the myriad of issues that teachers and the GTU have been “grappling with” over the last academic year, McDonald emphasised the need for professionalism as forward movements are made. “We have no doubt, that this new academic year 2014-2015 will continue to demand that we as a Union, and as teachers, are nothing but professionals in our approach to education,” said McDonald as she pointed out that “it is therefore incumbent on all of us to be prepared to give of our very best, recognising that we have a sacred duty to ensure that the nation’s children are given nothing but the best quality education.”
Moreover, she noted that “we at the Guyana Teachers’ Union will continue to stand solidly with you as we work together to ensure that all our schools are safe and secure and the learning environments of our children are conducive to the facilitation of quality education.”
