Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ lost their second game of Group 6 action in the Caribbean Football Union Men’s Caribbean Cup championships yesterday at Warner Park, St. Kitts and Nevis by a 0-2 margin to St. Lucia.
The Guyanese gave up goals either side of play as the St. Lucians played a physical game that the young Guyana side could not handle. St/ Lucia took the lead in the first half through a Burton Emanuel header within the opening 15 minutes, rising above the Guyanese defense to head home.
Guyana did create many chances of their own but were let down by indecisive finishing. After taking the lead, St. Lucia were content to sit back and allow the Guyanese to come to them. That tactic almost cost them but good defending kept them ahead.
As the game neared the end, the St. Lucians tactic of responding on the counter paid off as Jamal Joseph slid past the Guyanese defenders to hammer the ball past the goalie to give his side a 2-0 advantage in the 84th minute.
Guyana’s Coach Denzil Thompson in post game comments said that they had a simple game plan which was to play the game in the simplest form but was disappointed that the team’s chances to score were not capitalized on.
His St. Lucian counterpart said that his team played brilliantly and showed how football is played.
Guyana will play their final game against the home team tomorrow from 20:30hrs and will face an uphill task to make it to the next round.
