Did you know that Compton Julian, Hubert Braithwaite, George Greene and Monty Hope were members of the West Indies Football Team Tour to the United Kingdom 1959?
Did you know that the first time footballers from the West Indies toured as a team was July 1959 when the Patrick Gomez led side visited the United Kingdom?
The then British Guiana was represented by Monty Hope, Compton Julian, Hubert Braithwaite and George Greene. The Caribbean team contested eighteen (18) matches – losing fourteen (14) and winning four (4). This is how it unfolded 55 years ago in the United Kingdom.
West Indies footballers vs Britain at Ipswich – Britain won 7-2; Jamaican Owen Parkes scored both goals for the visitors.
Against Cornwall County they lost 1-0; lost to Cornwall again this time 2-1, Barbadian Reggie Haynes netted for the Caribbean Boys. Lost 3-1 to Isthmian, Ronald Gray was the goal scorer for the West Indies.
Defeated Spalding United 3-0, goal scorers were Owen Parks, Ken East and Reggie Haynes. Went down to Wisbech Town 5-4, goal scorers for the Caribbean team were Owen Parks (2) Compton Julian and Ronald Gray.
Kingslynn defeated them 3-1 at Norfork 3-1, Jamaican Owen Parks netted for the West Indies.
Defeated Ely City 2-1 with goals coming off the boot of Reggie Haynes and Alvin Corneal. Were hammered 11-1 by Crystal Palace; defeated Barking at Essex 2-1 with goals coming from Trinidad and Tobago’s Alvin Corneal and Reggie Haynes.
Went down 1-3 to Pegasus at Oxford, Jamaican Ken East was the player on target for the visitors who defeated the New Market team 2-0 compliments of goals from Owen Parks and Ronald Gray.
