The murder trial of Naresh Ramjohn called ‘Naresh Mahase’ or ‘Saddam,’ of Stanleytown and Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam has begun in the Berbice High Court, before Justice Navendra Singh and a mixed Jury.
Ramjohn is on trial for the murder of 28-year-old Anthony Samaroo, called ‘Scar Them,’ of Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice. The offence is alleged to have been committed on July 2, 2008, at Levi Dam, Angoy’s Avenue.
Prosecuting the state’s case is attorney at law Renita Singh. While the accused is being represented by attorney at law Murseline Bacchus.
In her opening address Prosecutor Singh related that on the day in question, Ryan Samaroo was walking on Levi Dam, when he was confronted by the accused and told that he and his brothers are ‘kochores’ and that their parents will find their bodies. Ryan allegedly continued walking and noticed one of his brothers, Tejpaul.
After speaking for a few minutes they looked up the street and
saw Ramjohn and his two brothers ‘Joe Boy’ and ‘Baboo’. ‘Joe Boy’ had a spear, ‘Baboo’ had a pitchfork and Ramjohn had what appeared to be a cutlass. According to the prosecutor, the Samaroo brothers ran away, went home and told another brother, Anthony Samaroo, what Ramjohn had told Ryan.
Anthony Samaroo then told them that he was going to settle the matter. When they got back to Levi Dam, they were attacked and Ryan and Tejpaul were able to escape. Ryan was standing some distance away and allegedly saw when Ramjohn stabbed his brother. Ramjohn then instructed his brothers to “Done he, done he.”
The two remaining Samaroo brothers then ran home and told their mother what was happening. They returned immediately together to Levi Dam, where they saw Anthony lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
The perpetrators by then had made good their escape.
A post mortem examination conducted on the body of Anthony Samaroo by Dr. Brijmohan at the New Amsterdam hospital revealed that he died from shock and hemorrhage due to multiple stab wounds.
Two years later, in May 2010, both Naresh Ramjohn and Ryan Samaroo was arrested for separate matters and ended up in the same lock up. Ryan Samaroo used the opportunity to inform the police that Naresh Ramjohn was the person who had murdered his brother.
The State has so far called four witnesses, including the slain man’s mother, Meena Persaud, his father, Tony Samaroo; Detective Corporal Lawrence Thomas and Detective Lance Corporal Denesh Baichu.
First on the witness stand was the victim’s father, who told the court that he received certain information and went to the hospital.
He was not able to see his son, but subsequently saw him on the day of the funeral. Detective
Corporal Baichu testified to witnessing the post mortem examination. Detective Corporal Thomas in his testimony recounted visiting the scene and conducting investigations into the matter.
The victim’s mother, Meena Persaud, told the court that she knew the accused for about ten years and that she lives about two streets away from where the accused lived.
They were all cross examined by attorney at law Murselene Bacchus.
