Botofago FC stormed back from being a goal down as early as the first minute to register an emphatic 4-2 triumph over Winners Connection in their semi-final clash on Sunday last at the Wisroc Secondary School ground. They now setup a final showdown against Eagles United who inflicted a 5-2 crushing on Netrockers in the other semi-final encounter.
In the opening game of the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) / Netrockers FC Under-20 Community Cup , Botofago found themselves trailing very early when Winners Connection marquee marksman Marmalique Davidson got on to the end of a set play and buried his effort shortly after the whistle sounded to start play.
However, just when it seemed as if it was going to be a walk in the park for Winners Connection, Botofago held their faith, kept their composure and stuck very well to their game plan which earned them their equalizer in the 20th minute, courtesy of Jamol Haynes.
The scores remained level at the half as no team managed to find the back of the nets thereafter.
Coming out of the break, whatever was said by Coach Colin Moore brought a new momentum to the ‘Fagos’ as they literally took the game out of the jaws of the lion, earning them the lead in the 58th minute with a Jevon Bobb goal.
Two minutes later Tevin Thompson added another one as Botofago took a 3-1 lead with half an hour left on the game clock. Winners connection Adrian Cadogan with his eyes on the prize as well narrowed the deficit when he found the back of the net in the 78th minute, but Haynes drove the final nail in the coffin when he completed a brace, scoring in the 84th minute, earning his team a well deserved spot in the final.
Meanwhile, in the second semi-final fixture of the day, Eagles United FC coasted to a comfortable 5-2 win over host Netrockers. Eagles United drew first blood in the early stages of the game when Kirt Johnson, who netted a hat-trick in the 5th, 30th and 34th minute of the game, gave them the ascendancy.
His explosiveness left Netrockers dazed and in total disarray as they struggled to find any sort of rhythm and were 3-0 down, before they managed to score their first goal in the 41st minute off the boots of the lanky Shane Luckie as they headed to the half trailing by two goals.
The final period begun with Eagles United still looking to increase their advantage and did just that in the 67th minute when Kellon Primo, who has now scored in every match, netted. However, Netrockers responded two minutes after through Anthony Layne, before Kwesi Quintin sealed the deal for Eagles United when he inked his name on the score sheet in the 72nd minute.
Winners Connection Marmalique Davidson currently has the most goals of the tournament with 13. The final and third place playoffs will be played at Wisburg Secondary School Ground, starting from 14:00hrs. Netrockers will battle Winners Connection for the third place prize, while the grand finale will commence from 16:00hrs with Eagles United facing Botofago FC for the coveted prize and bragging rights.
