With school back in session, students from Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools around Georgetown have been benefitting from a number of outreach initiatives, hosted by overseas-based organisations and individuals.
Yesterday, approximately 400 Brickdam Secondary School students received new backpacks, while some were given school supplies, compliments of the school‘s Alumni Association.
President of the association, Winston James, said the organisation was established four years ago to make a positive contribution to the school’s development.
“We, past students both overseas-based and locals, basically came together to organize a committee where we focused on doing something positive for our school,” James said.
The President noted that the association has since participated in various projects aimed at the enhancement and development of the school.
“We have donated new furniture and assisted with various infrastructural projects to create a better school environment for both students and teachers,” James revealed.
He said that a successful backpack drive was held earlier this year to raise money for the backpacks for all students in form two through five. “The students from forms two through five received backpacks while all new students entering form one received basic school supplies, because we have not forgotten about them,” the man said yesterday.
The Alumni will also be covering the cost for the internet service for the school for the entire first term.
James said that on August 9, last, the association hosted another successful fundraising event in Brooklyn, New York, and all the proceeds from that event will be used to benefit the children of the school.
“We can’t emphasize enough how thankful we are to have sponsors like Hibiscus Restaurant, Sybil’s West Indian Bakery, Allstate Agent, Mark Totaram, Tasty Corner Restaurant and other supporters for their contribution with pulling off these events,” he remarked.
James revealed that he is currently in discussions with the school’s Head Teacher to determine the best way in which the funds can be utilized to benefit the students.
On Monday last, overseas-based Guyanese and founder of Lifting Youth for Tomorrow’s Success (LYTS), Kerwin Adams, donated a quantity of school supplies to students of the Sophia Primary School.
Adams, who originally hails from Tucville, Georgetown, gave backpacks and school supplies to the students from Sophia, Tucville and Enterprise Primary Schools.
The father of three, who currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, said that the organisation is his way of giving back to the community.
He said that LYTS has been established for the past four years and has since contributed to several schools in New York and Guyana. “I migrated to the United States 25 years ago…I currently work with a Law Firm, but I wanted to give back, so I started LYTS.
It’s basically taking from my own pocket to promote and assist children, especially those at the lower end of the socio-economic scale,” Adams explained.
Last year, Adams teamed up with the Benschop Foundation and donated a quantity of school supplies and toys to approximately 70 students residing in and around Georgetown.
