The inaugural Ansa McAl/Stag Beer ‘West Side’ 5-a-side football tournament semi finals are set for tonight and will see Showstoppers coming up against the undefeated New Road Eagles while Stewartville Gunners and surprise contenders De Kendrend Village will go head-to-head, action set to kick off at 20:00hrs at the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac.
In Wednesday’s quarter finals, the Showstoppers and Tuschen Up-Top Youths showdown went all the way to sudden death penalty kicks to decide the winner. Showstopper’s Marvin Josiah, the tournament’s leading goal scorer put his team in the lead scoring the first of a hat-trick in the first minute of the game. However, just on the brink of half time, John Waldron equalized for the Tuschen team.
The second half saw Dexroy Adams hitting home in the 21st minute, giving Showstoppers a 2-1 advantage. John Waldron completed his double in the 27th minute to silence the Tuschen fans.
After both teams failed to find the nets, the game went into extra time, and it was Tuschen Up-Top Youths through back-to-back goals from Calvin Shepherd (33, 34) that took a 4-2 lead which didn’t last for too long as Josiah responded to complete his hat-trick scoring in the 35th and 39th minute to send the game to sudden death penalty kicks.
With both sides hitting the target, Tuschen’s Devon Millington was the first to miss and Adams made them pay when he converted for Showstoppers sealing their semi-final place tonight.
New Road Eagles kept their unbeaten record intact by sending home the lone Georgetown team that remained in the competition, Broad Street 2-0 through goals from Leroy Pedro (20) and Jermaine Junior (25).
Stewartville Gunners shot their way to a 2-0 win over Uitvlugt. The game got off a terrifying start when one of the Gunners players broke his leg in an unfortunate collision with an Uitvlugt player resulting from a tackle.
The game was momentarily brought to a halt as organizers and teammates whisked the player away to a nearby hospital. Showstoppers then made light work of Uitvlugt in recording the win.
Meanwhile, Vergenoegen All-Stars failed to shine when it mattered most as the tournament’s other undefeated team folded 2-0 to De Kendrend Village.
