Despite a confrontation between two brothers at the No.71 Ground that forced the cancellation of games at that venue, activities in the GUYTRAC T20 knock-out cricket competition, organized by the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association (UCCA) has progressed satisfactorily with teams advancing to the semi final stage.
That apart, fans were treated to several exciting duels with one match ending in a tie and the other being decided by a super over. Over at the No. 73 ground, Skeldon Community Centre defeated No. 71 by 8 wickets with 12.2 overs remaining.
Batting first, No. 71 reached 100 in 19.1 overs, Deodar Mohamed top scoring with 20. Bowling for Skeldon, Parmanand Narine took 3-9 while Deon Esau snared 2-20. Skeldon raced to 101-2 in 7.4 overs with Sherwin Murray leading the assault with 55*.
Also at the same venue, No. 64 Fighting Marines defeated Crabwood Creek Rising Stars (CWC) by 90 runs. Batting first the Marines raced to an even 200-6 in their 20 overs with worthwhile contributions from Steven Embrack (61) and Davendra Budhoo (50) while bowling for CWC, Omar Khan took 2 wickets.
In reply CWC were bowled out for 110 in 18.2 overs, Lakeram Seegobin scored 36 and Naresh Deo 34. Bowling for the Marines, Steven Embrack took 2-7; Raj Subhan supported with 2-16.
In the game at Skeldon, the home team defeated Corriverton by 6 wickets with 3.3 overs to spare. Batting first Corriverton was restricted to 123-9 off 20 overs, Clavern Beresford led with 38.
Robert Moore grabbed 4-17 for Skeldon and received support from Javid Alli who picked up 3-12. In reply Skeldon reach 124-4 in 16.3 overs, Charles France (54) and Parmanand Narine and Junior Blair contributing 21runs each. Bowling for Corriverton Jermaine Reid picked up 3-11.
In the final game played at the No. 73 ground, Springlands defeated No. 43 Scorpion in a game which required a super over to decide the winner after the two teams posted 139 off their allotted 20 overs.
No. 43 Scorpion then scored 11 while Springlands needed just two deliveries to reach the winning total; Trishan Ramdass lashed 2 sixes to seal the deal for his team.
The competition continues on Sunday at the # 70 ground where No. 69 Red Rose will play No. 72, Cut and Load from 10:00hrs. The winner of that game will then play No. 70 Cricket Club.
Meanwhile, the administrators of the UCCA have voiced their disappointment over the indiscipline exhibited by residents in the No. 71 community whose disruptive behavior forced the cancellation of several games.
Those officials said that it is a dark day for cricket in the Upper Corentyne even though much effort is being placed into the development of the game. They are calling on officials of the NDC and RDC to investigate the matter.
The ground is owned by the Government of Guyana and only recently $1M was plugged into rehabilitation efforts. Officials have since decided to remove all matches from the venue until the authorities investigate the issues surrounding usage and ownership of the venue.
