In what was indeed a finals to behold on Monday last at Dynasty Sports Club, Aubrey Barker Road, an epic battle ensued between Phantom, Strikers Sports Club and Golden Masters in the battle for supremacy for the Shew’s General Store of Leopold Street three-way sponsored aggregate dominoes tourney.
The games which started at South View Tavern, Aubrey Barker Road on Tuesday last, saw Phantom coming out on top with 77 games followed by hosts Golden Masters 73 and Strikers Sports Club in the cellar with 63 games.
For the winners, Frank Soloman made the maximum 18 games while Paul Persaud and Rodwell Phillips chalked up 15 and 14 respectively for Golden Masters.
David Patterson led with 17 games and Roderick Harry 14, in a losing cause.
On Thursday the second round was contested at Strikers Sports Club, Meadow Brook Gardens where the hosts came out tops in a nail biting finish tallying 78 games, just one more than Golden Masters with Phantom brining up the rear on 63 games.
Sydney James and Roderick Harry made 15 games apiece and were supported by Lyndon Boston and Neville Cadogan with 14 games each. Rodwell Phillips who was picked to play through marked 30 games while Paul Persaud and Dillon Griffith contributed 15 and 14 games respectively. Colin Downs’ 14 games was not enough for Phantom. Trekking down lovers lane was Terrence Wills of Strikers Sports Club.
After two rounds of play, Golden Masters were on 150 games, Strikers Sports Club 147 and Phantom 140, heading into the finals that saw Phantom amassing 81 games while Strikers Sports Club who after the third sitting seemed totally out of the match made 75 games and Golden Masters three games back on 72.
The final overall scores, Golden Masters 222 games, Strikers Sports Club 222 Games and Phantom 221 games saw the statisticians heading to the archives to determine the winners of the match. Strikers Sports Club and Golden Masters both recorded 17 sixes each.
Golden Masters were declared winners by virtue of recording more 5’s, they had ten compared to Strikers Sports Club’s nine.
Gavin Gibbons marked 17 games at the third and final leg and was supported by Jermaine Jackson and Terrence Wills with 14 apiece for Strikers Sports Club while Clive Anderson and Dillon Griffith made 16 and 15 games respectively for Golden Masters. Skipper Rawle Cameron had 17 while Colin Downs and Charles Hooper contributed 15 each with Trevor Ambrose chipping in with 14 for Phanthom. David Patterson of Strikers Sports Club was taken down lover’s lane, involuntarily so, by Rawle Cameron of Phantom.
First and Second placed trophies were awarded to the respective teams while there were incentives for the top players in each team; Dillon Griffith for the winners collected for his 42 games overall while Gavin Gibbons of Strikers Sports Club (40 games) and Frank Solomon (42 games) of Phantom were also rewarded.
