Delma Lynch was an astute woman with a melodious voice who sang her way into the hearts of many who heard her. She spent almost her entire adult life as a singer and maintained a good reputation during those years.
But Lynch is no more. The veteran singer, 67, passed away early yesterday morning.
Her daughter, Audrey Paul, confirmed the news, and informed this publication that her mother had three other children, two of whom reside overseas. Kaieteur News understands that she also leaves to mourn 10 grandchildren.
Friends and colleagues of the veteran musician spoke highly of her contributions.
Musician and movie producer, Bonny Alves said that he had the “distinct privilege” of working with Lynch on several projects including two movies – ‘The Will To Live’ and ‘Right Choices’.
He said that he recorded two songs of Lynch’s at Ssignal Studio — 50/50 Love and Start Over —and also did music videos for these songs. “We will certainly miss her.”
Leader of the Yoruba Singers, Eze Rockcliffe told Kaieteur News that he knew of Lynch since the early 1960s, during which time he was in High School. He said that at that time Lynch and Rita Forrester were “the talk of the town” and conversations were about which could sing best.
Rockcliffe said that he became friends with Lynch in 1980 after he brought her out of retirement to perform at the ‘Yoruba and Friends in Concert’ at the then Friends Night Club.
He said that in 1982 he took Lynch to the United States of America when Yoruba Singers went on its first tour. The musician said that Pamela Maynard‘, Czerina Ali, Otis Holder and Pat Thompson, all of whom are now dead, also went on that tour as auxiliary members of the Yoruba Singers after being part of the Yoruba and Friends concert.
Rockcliffe said that as the friendship grew stronger, he was privileged to have Lynch accompany him and the Yoruba Singers on three other tours.
He said that by 1983 Lynch became so generous that she sewed free costumes for Yoruba Members for them to wear during a performance at Madison Square Garden.
Rockcliffe described Lunch as an excellent singer, who was particularly fond of doing cover performances of songs originally done by Gladys Knights, Miriam Makeba, Bob Marley, Carlene Davis and Bette Midler.
The musician said that he visited Lynch last Tuesday “she held my hand throughout the visit and didn’t want me to leave.”
He said, on behalf of the Yoruba Singers, that she will definitely be missed, “we had great moments together in the field of show business. Delma was a good mother, friend and singer. She was charming and was always able to woo the crowd whenever she stepped on stage.”
Kaieteur News understands that Lynch worked with the Mischievous Guys band and toured Trinidad and Tobago with the Rhythmaires. She also performed with the Jazz Crusaders.
