Monnederlust FC (MFC) defeated New Amsterdam United FC (NAUFC) in sudden death penalty kicks, after the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate, to claim the 2nd Annual Hope Memorial U20 Football Competition, at the Burnham Park, New Amsterdam, Sunday evening last.
The match was a keenly contested affair with MFC dominating the first half with their opponents emulating their efforts in the second session. Monnederlust started aggressively and netted in the 2nd minute, compliments of a stinging shot off the boot of Atlyn Brown.
Despite good defensive tactics exhibited by NAUFC, the visitors went ahead 2-0 after Kevin Layne tucked a soft shot into the back of the nets. That was the only other success and the teams went in at the intermission with the score unchanged.
NAUFC opened their account 14 minutes after the resumption, compliments of a Howard Smith success which seemed to bolster the spirits of the home team. They upped the ante but the opposition defended staunchly, preserving their slim 1-0 lead.
As the game progressed and with Monnederlust enjoying a one goal advantage, the opposition earned a corner kick and the ensuing strike hit the crossbar before rebounding into play for the lurking Gladstone Lyte to convert and equalize the situation.
Bad light at the end of regulation time forced the game straight into penalty kicks and Monnederlust eventually prevailed. The winners and runners-up received trophies from President of the Hope Football Club, Mr. Mac Adams while Kevin Layne of Monnederlust received $20,000 after being adjudged the Most Valuable Player.
His teammate, Selwyn Jack, collected $15,000 for being the best goalkeeper while Akeem Watts won the prize for the best midfielder. Both teams had had earned the right to compete in the finals after registering impressive victories in their semi finals encounters; NAUFC defeated Rosignol United 4-1 while Monedderlust humiliated Hope Football Club 4-0.
The tournament was organized by the Hope Memorial Foundation in memory of the late Wilbur “Hopey” Hope a former national footballer, referee and coach. Hope, a former resident of Tucber Park, New Amsterdam suffered from an acute heart condition and passed away at the 33 years old.
