The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) 2014 Intermediate Boxing Championship concluded at the M&CC Municipal Centre, California Square, East Ruimveldt, Sunday evening last and the large attendance was truly a joy to behold.
Of more importance was the fact that most of the boxers delivered and on several occasions the organizers were forced to halt the proceedings in between bouts while requesting that the over exuberant spectators desist from encroaching the ring.
Seon Griffith shows off the rewards of diligent training and staunch application after his bout last Sunday evening.
Several boxers truly turned in great performances and one could have imagined the difficulties experienced by the panel tasked with selecting the best boxer. In the end, Republican pugilist, Clifton Graham, earned the nod after decisively defeating Jason Phillips in the 69kgs category.
Amidst the other action packed encounters, another fighter stood out, not only by dint of his performance that night but when it is noted that he had been away from the ring for three years and had only returned to the gym about one month prior to the tournament.
That boxer is Seon Griffith, an Albouystown resident of the Forgotten Youth Foundation. He punched his way to a unanimous verdict over Jamal Eastman (RHJ), a seasoned pugilist, in the 52kgs division.
The uninitiated would have never realized that Griffith had had such a lengthy sabbatical as he slugged it out with a far more seasoned Eastman to win by a close split decision. Speaking with his Coach, Sebert Blake, moments after Griffith exited the ring, I learnt of the reason for the sabbatical but in keeping with a promise I made, I cannot go into detail.
However, it is those details that have caused me to respect the ability, pluck and determination of this young pugilist. The win last Sunday night has improved his record to an impressive 13 fights with 11 wins and just two losses.
He distinctly remembers one of those losses to Romel Rowley of the Republican Boxing Gym and said that now he is back in the ring, he wants to avenge the loss; he cannot remember the name of the other boxer to whom he had lost.
A truly humble individual, one would not immediately notice his talent; he comes over as inconsequential. His application and the eventual results of his bout last Sunday evening tell a different story and as his Coach said in summing up his future, Seon Griffith is one to watch!
