There was one major upset as the other three top flight clubs coasted through when the Victory Valley Royals 20th Anniversary 8-team knock-out basketball competition was contested on Friday and Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court, Linden.
Fourth seed Retrieve Raiders were felled by the 4th ranked Half Mile Bulls but the number one ranked Kings, 2nd seed Amelia’s Ward Jets and 3rd rated Victory Valley Royals all reached the semifinals which are to be played on Friday at the same venue.
Last Friday the opening game saw hosts Royals out bouncing Block 22 Flames 53-44 after trailing the Flames by the end of the first quarter 7-13 before taking a 21-15 half time lead. The Royals never looked back and were in cruise control after the third quarter 34-30.
They went on to win 53-44 led by the top score of 19 from Orlando Glasgow and Chris Williams 10. Selwyn Henry and Shane Carmichael netted 17 and 15 points for the losers. Jets then flew past Falcons in a battle of teams from the Amelia’s Ward community; centre Allister Webster and guard Amaniniki Archibald were the top markers for the winners with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Leonard Caleb (14) and Marlon Persaud (11) could not prevent the Falcons from booking their final four spot.
On Saturday evening, Linden champions Kings, whipped Bluberry Hill by a whopping 70-33 margin, seizing the initiative from jump ball as they led in the first quarter 23-8, by half time the score line read 45-17.
By the end of the penultimate quarter, a 30 point advantage 56-26 was established before the game ended 70-33.
Former National Guard Steve Neils (Jr.) fired in six shots from beyond the paint for the joint top score of 23, Quincy Easton matching Neils’ score while Eon Reddock supported with 12 for the Kings. Stephan Arthur was the lone Blueberry Hill who made it to double figures with 11.
In the other game, Bulls came out in positive mood and were able to win their match against the Raiders. The Bulls jumped to a 23-17 lead after the first quarter expired but the Raiders bounced their way back into contention with a 34-37 half time lead.
However the Bulls galloped during eth 3rd quarter to retake the lead 55-44and eased to a tense one point win, 63-62 which earned them a place into the final four.
Terron Welch poured in 23 points, Kevin Easton 11 and Travin Dryden 10 for the Bulls who now face Kings on Friday in one semifinal. Past national forward Neil Marks netted 16 points with Keon Cameron and Lawrence Dacosta dunking in 14 each for the Raiders. The other semifinal on Friday pits Royals and Jets.
