Close to three months after the President and the Opposition Leader began consultations, five persons were yesterday sworn in as commissioners of the Public Service Commission at the Office of the President.
Those elected and sworn in by President Donald Ramotar were: Patrick Yarde, Carvil Duncan, Vidyawattie Looknauth, Patricia Whent and Mohammed Akeel.
President Ramotar in brief remarks noted that the Commission is mandated to enhance the public service and life of public servants.
The basic function of the constitutional body is to make appointments and without its existence, such functions are affected.
The Commission is the regulatory mechanism of the public service; it is tasked with dealing with aspects of superannuation benefits for retiring public officers and salary approvals for acting appointments so that payments can be made for such functions.
Members of the Commission are appointed for three years. The four service commissions are: the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Teaching Service Commission (TSC), the Public Service Commission, and the Police Service Commission.
The lives of these commissions expired over the past year and the constitutionally mandated provisions for their reconstitution have finally been completed.
Several sections of civil society were in uproar over the hiatus in appointing the Constitutional body.
