Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker, along with his Permanent Secretary, Collin Croal, met with vendors of the Bourda and Albouystown Municipal Markets on Friday last, with the aim of ascertaining some of the critical issues that are affecting the vendors’ daily operations.
The vendors highlighted that improper solid waste disposal facilities and illegal roadside vending are daily challenges they are facing.
They pointed out to the Minister and his team, the need for an efficient collection of solid waste from the markets and the availability of more rubbish-bins for waste disposal.
The vendors noted that the garbage accumulated from the market is not collected punctually by garbage disposal trucks, and as a result leaves a foul stench the following day.
Most vendors expressed frustration with the unhygienic stock-pile of garbage in the market, as it negatively impacts their daily trading.
The vendors also drew to Minister Whittaker’s attention, the issue of illegal roadside vending, which leads to unfair competition in the market, since the illegal vendors do not pay the Mayor and City Council.
They emphasized that roadside vending was also a significant contributor to the clogging of drains and filthy parapets around the Markets.
Minister Whittaker and his team were also given a detailed outline of how the poor plumbing systems contribute to inadequate water supply to the markets. The vendors pointed out that on many occasions they were forced to close their stalls due to insufficient supply water.
Minister Whittaker assured the vendors that the Government of Guyana had provided resources to improve the environment and aesthetics of Georgetown, which will include all Municipal Markets present in the city.
He assured them that they were going to be beneficiaries of these improvements under the “Clean-Up My Country” Programme.
