ECCB Cricket Academy
Historian Professor Tota Mangar urged participants of the East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) Cricket Academy to take advantage of the opportunities being offered to them during the five-day programme whilst delivering the feature address at the conclusion of the area Board’s 14th cricket Academy at the Lusignan Community Centre.
“I would like you to take this very seriously, take full advantage of the academy, you will benefit in the long run because cricket is not only played nationally but also internationally,” Mangar told the gathering.
Mangar stressed that in addition to the technical aspects of cricket the youths learnt other important aspects of life skills and commended recently re-elected ECCB President Bissoondyal Singh and his Executives for their excellent work on the East Coast of Demerara.
Mangar commended the Board for organising the Academy, adding that it must have taken commitment and dedication to continuously organize this programme. According to Mangar, cricket is no longer played as recreation but is now very commercialized and serious business.
“This initiative by the ECCB is very laudable and it comes against the background of the problems facing cricket administration in Guyana. I urge you to retain the knowledge, work hard and do your utmost to be good ambassadors of Guyana”.
He urged the participants to emulate players like Clive Lloyd and Shivnarine Chanderpaul as role models. Thirteen year-old Avin Gangadin spoke of his experiences at the Academy while President Singh stated that he believes the academy will aid in the improvement of each participant and also the general standards of Guyana’s cricket from youth to senior level.
“This is not about having a certificate or a trophy to show your friends that you have attended the ECCB Academy. We want to ensure that each of you become better citizens who can contribute to our country,” Singh stressed.
He told the students that they were not only taught the art of playing cricket but the dangers of using illicit drugs, the benefits of being fit, personal hygiene, discipline, commitment and dedication among other facets of life that should make them better citizens.
Zaheer Mohamed and Kevin Bazil are the only past students to have played for Guyana at the senior level but Singh pointed out that Brian Sattuar, Kumar Nandalall, Emran Khan,, Clive Andries, Krishna Deosarran, Kamesh Yadram, Abeena Parker, Devanie Sewnarine, Indomattie Goordial, Triolla Marshall, Faye Franklyn, Kavita Yadram, Reneeka Isaacs, Haseena Mohamed, Darlene Gayle, Bashkar Yadram and Amanda Persaud were past students who represented Guyana at various levels.
The ECCB Head said he did not want anyone to be frustrated or despaired, adding that Government passed the ‘Cricket Bill’ to end lawlessness in cricket Administration and put in place professional people to manage cricket so that every child in this country is afforded an opportunity regardless of race or religion.
Singh urged President Ramotar and Sports Minister Frank Anthony to bring to an end as soon as possible, to what he described as, ‘mayhem, discrimination and lawlessness’.
Secretary of the ECCB Judister Rampersaud thanked the sponsors, the Lusignan N.D.C and all those who contributed in making the Academy a success.
