A last gasp goal in the 68th minute off the boot of the inspirational Seon Alfred on the brink of regulation time, equalized the situation 2-2 for Herstelling Raiders FC and ensured that their CULT/East Bank Football Association Under-17 semi final match against Agricola Red Triangle had to go into penalty kicks.
Herstelling prevailed 3-2 from the spot kicks in an epic battle at the Grove Playfield on Saturday afternoon last.
Agricola enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half complements of 20th and 30th minute successes off the boots of Stephon Madeline and Dekhown Matthews respectively, while the opposition’s goal was scored by Seon Alfred in the 33rd minute.
Both teams fought ferociously and the second session was characterized by fierce confrontations and numerous missed opportunities. The minutes were ticking away and the Agricola team was already anticipating victory when Seon Alfred collected a well-placed offering and performed a solo down the right flank before tucking the ball to the right of the advancing Agricola custodian. The effort was indeed timely as the whistle sounded shortly afterwards and the ensuing penalty shootout sealed the deal for Herstelling whose goalkeer, National Under-17 Quazim Yusuf was brilliant between the uprights for his side.
While the first match was fiercely fought, the second encounter between Grove Hi Tech and Kuru Kururu Warriors turned out to be a one sided affair with the former team carting off the spoils 4-0 compliments of goals by Kirk Cummings (2), Nicholy Matthews (49), and a brace from National Under-17 forward, Joel Dick (60, 64).
Herstelling and Grove Hi Tech will now clash at the same venue on Saturday September 6 next for championship honours just after Agricola engages Kuru Kururu Warriors in the third place playoff.
All four teams will receive trophies while there will be prizes for the Most Valuable Player, Best Goal-keeper and the Highest Goal Scorer.
The tournament commenced in early May but was disrupted by rain before the organizers placed activities on hold to facilitate the just concluded FIFA World Cup. Seven teams were involved in the tournament including Timerhi Panthers, Soesdyke Falcons, Kuru Kururu Warriors, Gove Hi Tech, Diamond United, Herstelling Raiders and Agricola Red Triangle.
