Recently established non-governmental organization, Blue Caps has high in hopes of meeting their stated public moral obligations. Organization Head, Clinton Urling said that the body is bent on being a watchdog for the upcoming elections, and is seeking in no way to align or affiliate itself with any political party.
Having been accused in the past of being aligned with the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Urling made it clear that his organization will make no steps to involve in the ‘National Front Alliance.’ The Blue Caps President noted instead, that their job is to become a watchdog in the elections process and ensure that all those concerned play their relevant role.
PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee told the media last week that his party is moving to establish a broad national democratic front, ahead of the next General Elections. During the party’s regular press conference at Freedom House, Rohee disclosed that the PPP has had discussions with stakeholders and interested groups on the country’s political climate, and commitment of higher transparency levels and accountability through shared governance was made.
He said the Party attracted many stakeholders who endorsed the development of a national democratic front. Despite apprehension in revealing the details of this front, Rohee urged that even the opposition parties should get on board in the discussion of shared governance.
The Combined Opposition has endorsed the idea of shared governance and has called for their many demands and recommendations to be addressed.
While the government has however accused the Opposition of engaging in political games; “misusing their parliamentary power and the abuse of their one seat majority,” the Opposition has in turn pointed fingers at the government for their lack of transparency and accountability with the country’s money. They have accused the government of failing to co-exist with the opposition because of alleged corrupt acts that might be uncovered.
As a result, the Opposition said that it has no choice but to bring a No-Confidence Motion against the government. The Alliance for Change (AFC), with the support of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) brought, specifically, a one-line no-confidence motion against the government. They feared that the Administration would “unnecessarily” head to Court to stall the motion had any reasons for the action been given.
The Opposition has hinted however that it is too late for “straw clutching tactics” by the government. The APNU has stated that the call for a national front by the PPP is a late one since; the APNU has always had an open door policy and has called for the input of stakeholders and concerned parties. “APNU is a Partnership with several political and civil organizations. We have always had an open door policy, contrary to that of the PPP,” Communications Director, Mark Archer had posited.
The Blue Caps have taken note however, that the possibility of general elections is very much on the front burner. Urling hinted that given the political climate, it is not farfetched that the country would see early polls. It is for this reason, he pointed out, that while Blue Caps does not seek connection to any Party, its members, individually are free to do so.
As a group, the organization has discussed its functions for general elections. That, they say, is to monitor the role of the Parties, the Elections Commission, and the media etc. Urling noted also that work is also being done to train and develop its members to provide the services that the organization seeks to provide. The President said the body will soon be opening its new headquarters in North Cummingsburg, Georgetown, and is financing itself with the contributions of its members; some 50 persons.
