A 36-year-old real estate agent was granted $100,000 bail yesterday after he was charged for obtaining money from a client for a plot of land he was in no position to sell.
Shawn Waaldijk, of Lot 90 Duke Street, Kingston, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the allegations before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that on February 18, last at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, Waaldijk obtained $500,000 from Alicia Joseph by falsely pretending that he could have sold her a house located at 1473 Block XXIV, Buxton on the East Coast of Demerara.
Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant told the court that Joseph had told her uncle that she was interested in purchasing a plot of land and he introduced her to the real estate agent. Waaldijk allegedly took Joseph to the area where the land is located in Buxton and she agreed to purchase it.
The real estate agent reportedly asked for $500,000 for the plot of land and she paid it.
The Court heard that after making her “purchase,” Joseph visited the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission Office and was told that the land belongs to someone else.
The thwarted customer reported the matter to the police and following the real estate agent’s arrest, a charge of Obtaining Money by False Pretence was instituted against him.
Waaldijk was represented by Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-Fat who made an application for reasonable bail. The lawyer noted that his client has been working as a real estate agent for the past 16 years.
The accused was granted bail and ordered to return to Court on September 30 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
