Two miners from Sand Road, Soesdyke who were accused of sneaking into the houses of two Linden/ Soesdyke residents and carting off almost $200,000 in items, were granted bail when they appeared in court yesterday.
Anthony Rogers, 24, and Michael Lawrence, 33, who were taken before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, allegedly committed both acts on Tuesday night.
The court heard that Rogers and Lawrence, employed as miners, broke into Rita Hyman’s house at Wiakabra and stole a generator set which cost $19,000.
Afterwards, the duo reportedly ventured to Darwin Canterbury’s home in Kuru Kururu, and broke in while everyone was sleeping. They are accused of stealing a quantity of items, including jewellery, cellular phones, clothing and electrical items to the value of $170,000.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Simone Payne, reported that on the night in question Canterbury was awakened by his baby who had started crying.
He ventured into his kitchen and noticed that five of the window panes had been removed. Payne said that the victim continued searching his house and discovered that a number of valuables were missing.
The matters were reported and during the investigation, police ranks were led to Rogers’ house where they found some of the missing articles.
The Prosecutor reported that further investigations led the ranks to Lawrence’s house (next door to Rogers) where the other articles were found. The miners were subsequently charged with break and enter and larceny.
During their court hearing, they pleaded not guilty and submitted bail applications through their lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat. They were separately granted $80,000 bail on each charge. The duo is scheduled to appear at the Providence Magistrates’ Court on October 18.
