Christopher Barnwell’s X1 won by three runs as Trevon Griffith’s X1, needing four from the last ball, were dismissed for 203 in reply to the 205 made by Barnwell’s X1 in 50 overs in the final Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) cricket trial match yesterday at Everest.
Batting first in sultry conditions on a slow track and sluggish outfield, Chanderpaul Hemraj followed up his 55 in the first trial on Tuesday with an accomplished 49 aided by three fours and three sixes before he was run out to end a 73-run third wicket stand with Steven Jacobs (45) after Rajendra Chandrika (3) and Andrew Lyght Junior (10) were sent back early to leave the score on 22-2.
Vishaul Singh chipped in with five fours in 42 before leg-spinner Amir Khan finished things off with an explosive unbeaten 25 from 15 balls with three sixes. Left-arm pacer Gavin Moriah took 3-29 and got support from Ryan Shun (2-18) and leg-spinner Antoniel Atwell (2-42).
When Griffith’s X1 began their reply the left-handed pair of Griffith and his Guyana Amazon Warriors teammate Robin Bacchus carried the score to 21 before Bacchus (7) was caught and bowled by Barnwell, another ‘Warriors’ player.
Griffith (23) then succumbed to a well judged catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary edge of left-arm spinner Raj Nanan at 58-2. Shemroy Barrington followed up his first match 40 with another entertaining innings before he lofted a catch to long-on as Nanan struck again at 73-3 just as Barrington was set for a big score.
Left-hander Shone DeSouza looked good for 40 before Nanan struck for the third time before Jeetendra Sukdeo kept his team in the hunt until the last over when the left-hander was bowled by left-arm Police fast bowler Randy Knights for an aggressive 45.
Jacobs had 3-24, Nanan 3-29 and former National under-19 pacer Sean Daniels 2-34 for the winners. A 21-man squad will be selected today and go into training over the weekend before the Demerara limited overs team is selected for this year’s Inter-County tournament which bowls off on Thursday.
