A North Ruimveldt man allegedly nabbed with an illegal gun last week was remanded to prison when he appeared in court yesterday.
Robin Corbin, 25, was taken before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
It is alleged that last Friday at Costello Housing Scheme, Georgetown, an unlicenced Corbin had a 7.65mm Taurus pistol in his possession. Corbin pleaded not guilty to the charge and submitted an application for reasonable bail through his lawyer, Abiola Wong-Innis.
The lawyer said Corbin was a first-time offender who resides with his mother at Lot 3736 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The lawyer explained that at the time, her client was in his mother’s car with a childhood friend and another individual, but only Corbin was arrested.
Her bail application was, however, met with strong objections from the Police Prosecutor, Corporal Seon Blackman. He asked the court to consider the seriousness of the offence, the punishment it attracts, and that the weapon found was dangerous.
Blackman claimed that when Corbin was confronted by the police, he told them that the handgun was his and the ranks took a confession statement. He said that the matter was further investigated and the suspect was charged.
The lawyer immediately objected, claiming that the confession statement was not freely and voluntarily given. Wong-Innis said that threats were made directly to her client as well as the safety and well-being of his mother.
However, bail was refused. The case is set to be called again on September 18 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
