With the CONCACAF Gold Cup football Regional tournament imminent, Statistician and regular contributor to Kaieteur Sport, Charwayne Walker, attempts to joggle the minds of sports enthusiasts in relation to Guyana’s history in the regional game over the years. This short series entitled ‘Did you know?’ starts today with interesting facts on one of our leading footballers, Deon Barnwell.
Did you know that Deon Barnwell, former Guyana International, scored nine Senior International goals before his nineteenth birthday?
This feat is probably unmatched in Regional Football. Barnwell, born on March 28, 1969, scored his first International goal against French Guiana at Camp Ayanganna at 16 years plus. Guyana won that international friendly two goals to one. In the series finale, Barnwell was on target again as the Land of Many Waters earned a hard fought draw.
His third and fourth goals came in January 1987 when Guyana defeated the Bahamas 3-1 in Nassau in an Olympic Qualifier. Goals five and six silenced a capacity Mindoo Phillip Park in Castries where Guyana humbled St. Lucia 3-1 in an international friendly, January 1987.
Goals seven and eight earned the Land Of Many Waters a two all drawn against Barbados at the National Stadium in Bridgetown, February 1987. Goal number nine helped Guyana humble Grenada 3-Nil at the Mackenzie Sports Club, August 1987. Deon was 18 years 4 months then.
