A prisoner, who was incarcerated since 2008, has been charged for threatening to kill a Magistrate and set fire to
the spanking new courthouse in Linden.
Leslie Payne, 42, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday and was granted $60,000 bail on a threatening language charge.
The court heard that on August 5, at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on Burnham Drive, Wismar Linden, Payne used threatening language towards Magistrate Clive Nurse. He pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
Addressing the court, Payne told the court that he has been in prison since September 11, 2008 and has no present address to provide. He said “I been married but the lady gone she way now cause I in prison so long. I’m single and I have six children.”
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Joel Ricknauth stated that Payne threatened to kill Magistrate Nurse, promising that he will “get his boys” to commit the act. Ricknauth reported too that the inmate threatened to burn the courthouse down.
The Inspector objected to him being granted bail, emphasizing that it was a Magistrate that Payne threatened.
His objections were, however, overruled. The case is set to be called before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 16.
