After a delay of close to an hour due to the late arrival of participants, the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) one-week Elite Youth ‘Summer Camp’ commenced in soggy conditions at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground yesterday in Queenstown.
The camp, which is sponsored by W&H Rambaran Marine, Distributor of Mariner Outboard Engines, commenced with an introduction to scoring session for under-15 males. This session was conducted by Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) scorer Calvin Roberts.
Former Guyana off-spinner and Demerara Head Coach Gavin Nedd and ex-East Coast and GNIC first division wicket Keeper turned Coach Clive Grimond provided the under-15s with batting drills after taking them through a warm up session. This program was done with more intensity for the U-17 participants in the afternoon session.
The camp continues today from 0900hrs with Umpire Matthew Kissoon delivering a presentation on the Laws of the Game, followed by warm-up sessions and bowling drills conducted by the coaches.
The morning session, which concludes at noon, caters for the U-15s, while the afternoon session (13:00hrs-16:00hrs) is for the U-17s. The sessions are spearheaded by Nedd with support from Grimond. The camp is being supervised by former West Indies pacer Colin Stuart, GCB’s Territorial Development Officer.
According to the DCB, the aim of the camp is to challenge, improve and develop the young cricketers’ ability, widen their knowledge of the game which should result in them developing more appreciation for cricket.
“We are encouraging more youths, both males and females, to join the camp. To be eligible for the U-15, players have to be born on or after 1st September 2000 and for the U-17, on or after 1st September 1998. Those interested can contact the DCB office on 223 5479 or Nedd on 617 9381” the DCB said.
The DCB is grateful to have W&H Rambaran Marine, Distributor of Mariner Outboard Engines onboard. This company is located Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara, and was founded in the early 1990s with its aim being to make its customers’ boating experience better in the long-run and to propel Guyana into the 21st century.
The DCB says W&H Rambaran Mariner Outboard Engines is the number one boat Engine on the water, adding that the Company supplies both Mariner and Mercury outboard engines, spare parts and accessories to the general public.
