The Clean- Up Guyana project is currently underway and several key interventions have been made as part of the exercise which commenced earlier this month.
At his weekly press briefing, Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon told the media on Thursday that the latest report prepared by the Ministry of Local Government, was presented to Cabinet on Tuesday last.
He explained that the report indicates that contracts for desilting the seven main canals of Georgetown to the tune of $34 million and works aimed at rehabilitating Le Repentir Cemetery, totaling almost $100 million have been expedited.
Further, several aspects of the work programme slated for the cemetery will be undertaken by the Guyana Prison Service, (GPS) under a contractual arrangement.
Moreover, Luncheon told the media that with the conclusion of the consultative process, works are currently underway in several city wards, and with input from the Ministry of Health, a quantity of fogging machines will be purchased as part of the cleaning efforts, along with several mini-excavators to assist Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and Regional Democratic Councils as part of the $1 billion project.
It is expected that works in other coastal communities will commence in approximately two weeks.
Meanwhile, Luncheon brushed off criticism about government’s choice in using Prison labour. Last week the Guyana Trades Union Congress spoke against the use of prison labour as part of the Clean-Up Guyana Project.
Luncheon said that while the union body has a right to raise such an objection, government cannot be prevented from using the services of the GPS. In years past, the services of the organization have been contracted by several entities and the use of “low risk” prisoners to undertake various tasks was common place.
The Clean – Up Guyana Project will see $500 million dollars being spent in rehabilitation works in Georgetown and its environs and $500 million being spent in coastal regions. Government took the decision to implement and fund the project due to the increasingly unsanitary conditions of the capital city and many coastal communities.
