A 13-year-old girl is seeking financial assistance to offset expenses expected to be incurred for surgery to correct a condition she was diagnosed with known as Scoliosis.
Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person’s spine is curved from side to side. Although it is a complex three-dimensional deformity, on an X-ray, viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with scoliosis can resemble an “S” or “A” rather than a straight line.
Monique Amsterdam, a third form student of Mackenzie High School was diagnosed in January 2012, after experiencing lots of discomfort and pains in her back. She resides at 238 One Mile, Wismar, Linden.
“I was diagnosed with scoliosis. My life as a normal child has been disrupted, I am unable to do lots of activities that other children do, evening walking is challenging for me at times.” She explained.
After attending a number of clinics at the Linden Hospital Complex and Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), in July 2014 the teen was given the devastating news that the surgery cannot be done in Guyana.
“My actual expenses which includes acquiring visas for both myself and mom, surgery, hospitalization, travelling, food and other things are in excess of four million Guyana dollars ($4M),” she underscored.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has committed to offset medical expenses by offering $1M on the condition that all necessary requirements are met.
In support of her request for donations, the teen and her parents produced a medical letter from the GPHC explaining her condition and diagnosis. Persons interested in rendering assistance can do so by contacting 678-7988 or 625-1184.
Funds can be deposited to Republic Bank account #1731611.
