Following inspections conducted in West Ruimveldt by the “Clean-Up My Country” Programme Monitoring Unit last Friday, concerns were raised over the occupation of illegal settlements along the Laing Avenue drainage canal.
The Monitoring Unit met with fifty residents from the community who were contracted by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development to spearhead the cleanup programme within the parameters of West Ruimveldt.
They pointed out that in order to effectively improve the internal drainage systems within the community, the Laing Avenue drainage canal must be cleaned simultaneously with the internal drains.
For this to materialize, the illegal settlements along the canal must be removed.
The “Clean-Up My Country” Programme commenced in West Ruimveldt on August 11, 2014. The community comprises four blocks; Block one – Vlissengen road to Fromby Street; Block two – Freeze Corner to Playfield Street; Block three – Playfield Street to First Bridge Front Road and Block four which stretches from First Bridge, Front Road to Hunter Street.
The cleanup activities include the de-silting of drains, clearing of parapets and the transportation of debris from the community to the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill Site. At present, Blocks One and Two are nearing completion and the transportation of debris is ongoing.
The cleanup exercise in the West Ruimveldt community is expected to be completed by the end of October.
Following the commencement of works within the community, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is seeking the cooperation of residents in removing all encumbrances along the government’s reserve land.
According to the Programme Committee, encumbrances and squatters are some of the main hindrances affecting the pace of the cleanup up programme.
The Committee insists that failure to adhere to this notice will result in the Georgetown Mayor and City Council using alternative enforcement to dismantle those illegal structures on the shoulders of drains and canals.
The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development seeks to remind the public that unauthorized occupation of the government’s reserve is illegal.
