In keeping with Government’s goal to ensure 90,000 families receive laptops, the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) Secretariat distributed 61 laptops to residents of Strathspey, East Coast Demerara on Thursday.
Bagmattie Deokarran, one of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to the Government for the implementation of the initiative and said that, “It will come into good use for my children, especially my 14- year- old son.”
Another recipient said she never had a computer and was very happy to receive hers. “I never know about computers, but I guess you never too old to learn. My grandson will use the computer and I also plan on using it to learn.”
Allan De Elly, another recipient, said he was overjoyed to be the recipient of a free laptop and added that it is a much needed tool for his three school aged children. He believes the OLPF initiative is of significant assistance to Guyanese citizens, especially to the less fortune families.
“I feel proud about the OLPF initiative and happy to have received the computer and it will be of great benefit to my grandson,” Gangadai Harold said.
In addition to the distribution at Strathspey, OLPF expects to distribute more laptops at Non-Pariel and Coldingen on the East Coast of Demerara on September 4.
On August 13, 300 residents at Lusignan East Coast Demerara received laptops and on August 8, 80 residents of Good Faith and Champagne, Mahaicony, Region 5 became beneficiaries. Residents of Mora Point Region 5 also received 80 laptops on August 17.
The OLPF programme is an initiative which aims at breaching the Information Communication Technology (ICT) gap in Guyana, and ensuring the less fortune citizens are able to enjoy the benefits of having access to a computer from the comfort of their homes. (GINA)
