Dr. Roger Luncheon announced yesterday that the ruling party the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has asked for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to extend its deadline for Claims and Objections period.
Luncheon at his weekly press briefing said that government was prompted to ask because of an overwhelming number of transfers. He said that government did not believe that the Claims and Objections period that lasts from August 4 to 31 would be sufficient to ensure a “clean list.”
On Monday, General Secretary of the PPP/C Clement Rohee made claims that the Preliminary List of Electors is padded. Rohee stated that party activists found 18 people living at the same address in Georgetown. He did not specify.
Rohee said that the PPP has been submitting irregularities to GECOM on an ongoing basis rather than waiting until the Claims and Objections period concludes.
Luncheon said yesterday that he has not seen the letter which was dispatched to GECOM by the government. However he said based on the workload the claims and objections period should be extended by at least another two weeks.
Earlier the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) claimed that it is aware that the PPP is using ‘so called’ Community Support Officers (CSO) to do political work in Barima-Waini Region.
A press statement from the Party had noted that the CSOs, who are paid by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs “are masquerading as officers of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and canvassing residents of the region.”
In response, Rohee noted “GECOM must produce its evidence of impersonators posing as GECOM officials in Region One.” He said the claim by GECOM put the lives of the PPP activists at risk.
“This hasty and unfounded claim by GECOM about impersonators on the ground on Region One was made in such a way that it put the lives of PPP activists at risk even before they went to check what the truth on the ground was,” Rohee stated.
The General Secretary had made it clear that it is GECOM’s responsibility to inform the public that Political Parties are “in possession of these lists and are carrying out house to house work to check for discrepancies.”
