Three men, including a 65-year-old taxi driver, were granted bail yesterday after they were charged for stealing cash from a woman’s car in the vicinity of the National Park on Tuesday.
The pensioner, Bertie Gulliver and accomplices Albert De Freitas, 50, and Phillip Khan, 53, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of Simple Larceny committed against Phara Arjune.
The court was told that at about 17:00 hours on Tuesday, the woman parked her vehicle on Thomas Lands, Georgetown to go and exercise in the National Park. When she returned, she saw that one of her car’s windows was broken and discovered that her wallet which contained $55,000 was missing.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Innis, reported that one of Arjune’s friends was passing and he witnessed when the trio committed the act. He reportedly saw them escape in a waiting car.
A report was made and the three men were subsequently arrested and charged.
In court, the men were all represented by Attorney-at-Law Kendaise Rodney who made a request for reasonable bail.
She said that De Freitas, a fisherman and father of five who resides at Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown; Gulliver, a father of five of Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara and Khan, a fisherman and father of ten, were not flight risks.
Rodney claimed that none of the three men had ever been convicted by the courts. She said that they are willing to subject themselves to conditions for bail if the court deemed this necessary.
The lawyer’s application was met with no objections from Corporal Innis, thus bail was granted in the sum of $75,000 each. They were each ordered to lodge their passports with the court and report weekly at 09:00 hours at the Brickdam Police Station commencing from August 29.
The men are scheduled to appear before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on October 10.
