Dear Editor,
I wish to offer my congratulations to Mark Lyte who was recently elected president of the Guyana Teachers Union. I know Mark is quite capable of representing the interests of the teachers with the necessary enterprise and courage. Mark’s abilty to accomplish his task can be partly attributed to the fact that he attended one of the best high schools in Guyana—Winifred Gaskin Memorial Secondary School, named after the late Winifred Gaskin, who was education minister in the Burnham government.
I was in a class/form above Mark ( in the mid and late eighties)and remember him as a dedicated student with excellent behavior. Mark was also a versatile sportsman who excelled in athletics and cricket. In the latter he represented Berbice as a fast bowler. I also remember Mark Benscope who was a very attacking middle order batsman. Other notable cricketers from Winifred Gaskin include Yudendra Dasrath and Ecum Barlow who both represented Berbice. We also produced many outstanding students including former junior Minister of Agriculture in the P.N.C. government, Simpson Da Silva.
As I congratulate Mark, I also wish to acknowledge the people who helped to mould us at this great institution. The principal, Ms. Norma Stuart, was a wonderful administrator whom I also had the previledge of working under as a teacher. She mixed discipline with love. She was supported by a wonderful staff of professional teachers. These include: English Language-Denny Carpen and Richard Bobb; Mathematics-Mohandas Birbal and Krishna Persaud; Social Studies-Frank McKenzie and Moureen Bynoe; Sciences-Vivekanand and Goutam Deodat; Geography-Parsram Sukhdeo; Spanish- Kalawattie Dasrath And Devi Persaud; History-Kenrick Tyndall; Agri. Science-Lynden Scott and M. Burgess; Technical and vocational subjects—Jagan Motieram, Niranjan Jagdeo and Henry Munroe; Home Economics—Valerie Kendall. My apologies if I missed anyone. These wonderful teachers made our schooldays enjoyable.
Onced again, I congratulate you Mark. Keep the Winifred Gaskin Flag flying high.
Mahindra Persaud
