The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA)/International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is currently hosting a Level I and II Coaches’ Certification Programme in Guyana at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
ITTF Latin American Development Officer, Spaniard, Ramon Ortega Montes, is conducting the courses. The Level II participants had to complete the Level I course and possess over one year of practical experience as a Coach as a prerequisite.
Ongoing is the Level II Course, which is somewhat test-based and participants must attain over 14.5 percent to do the Level III Advanced programme. This Course is internationally renowned and offers Coaches the opportunity to advance their knowledge.
For the Level II Programme, the GTTA has selected Coaches, who have been previously trained at Level I and have been working to develop the sport. The course has an international dimension with participants from Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname and Grenada.
The GTTA has selected personnel from across Guyana, including Regions 3, 7, 10, and 6 in view of spreading the base of the sport. The programme forms a critical element to the development of the sport in Guyana.
“Based on the fact that knowledge transitioning is critical for international success, this is a step for advancing the knowledge of our coaches and by extension raising the level of the players and creating the catalyst for improving the institutional structure,” GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe said when contacted.
According to Munroe, several key initiatives will be undertaken when following the intervention of Montes and the ITTF. He said that all is aimed at transforming the Table Tennis landscape in Guyana.
