Bandits on a CG motorcycle held up pump attendants of the Rubis Gas Station on Vlissengen Road, Wednesday night, before escaping with over $80,000. It is believed that the duo was also planning to hit a nearby service station as well, but a police patrol present there at the time is believed to have thwarted their plans.
When Kaieteur News arrived shortly before 23:00hrs, the gas station had closed operations with staffers in the locked mini-mart in a meeting.
According to a senior staffer, the robbery occurred shortly after 21:00hrs while it was raining.
There was a lone car that had just finished filling up and two pump attendants along with the female Shift Operator were on duty.
The motorcycle with two men, one wearing a helmet, pulled up. They went to the diesel pump and were sent to the gasolene pump.
“They ordered $2,000 gas and the one that was seated at the back, lift up his shirt, took out a handgun and put it to the attendant’s head and demanded money.”
According to the staffer, the attendant was reluctant to hand over the money, but the gunman cranked the weapon in a threatening manner.
The attendant handed over his BlackBerry cell phone and $66,000. The gunman also relieved the other attendant of almost $20,000.
The female staffer said, she stooped down after seeing the robbery in progress and hurried into the mini-mart where she alerted other co-workers.
The two gunmen reportedly rode over to an adjacent gas station with the apparent intention of robbing the facility. However, a police patrol was in the vicinity and the two left hurriedly.
Investigators arrived shortly after.
According to one staffer, it seemed strange, as it was only recently that cameras that monitored the gas stations had been taken down for servicing. At the time of the robbery, they had not been put back.
One staffer said that earlier in the day a taxi had pulled up and a passenger said he wanted to rob the place.
“I tell him why don’t he go rob a bank and he say that they have too many cameras. He look up and he ain’t see no camera. He say he coming back.”
Police investigators are also not ruling out the possibility of it being an inside job, especially as the robbers seemed confident and were not masked, probably aware that the cameras were not working.
