A self-employed man was jailed yesterday for chopping an acquaintance to the head during a confrontation in April, last.
Ceon Lewis, 33, of Holmes Street, South Cummingsburg, had chopped Sherman Munroe in the middle of his head with a cutlass during a heated confrontation in the streets.
Lewis, whose case was tried before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday, was jailed for two years.
The incident occurred on April 22, last at Holmes Street.
Both men reside on the same street and they have known each other for the past ten years. They were “not on speaking terms” when the incident occurred.
The court heard that around 06:00 hours that day, 33-year-old Munroe was walking along Holmes Street when he and Lewis had a confrontation that stemmed from previous grievances.
During the dispute, Lewis reportedly armed himself with a cutlass and dealt Munroe a chop to his head. Munroe, who bled profusely, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated.
The matter was reported and subsequent investigations led to Lewis being arrested and charged for Unlawful Wounding.
Two days later, Lewis was taken before the court and he pleaded not guilty. A trial was later conducted before Magistrate Chandan-Edmond.
During the trial, the Prosecution spearheaded by Lance Corporal Jomo Nichols had called upon several witnesses to testify and Magistrate Chandan-Edmond, who returned the verdict yesterday, found him guilty.
During mitigation, Lewis, a first-time offender, apologised for his actions and told the court that he has minor children. The Police Prosecutor, in his response, asked the court to consider the severe injuries Munroe had sustained and impose a custodial sentence.
The city Magistrate then sentenced Lewis.
