A vendor, who staged two armed robberies early yesterday morning with a toy gun, has been jailed for twelve months.
Merely hours after making off with cash and a cellular phone from two victims, John Martin, 48, of Leopold Street, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery under arms.
The court heard that around 05:00 hours yesterday, Monique Vossey was in a Route 45 minibus on Main Street, Georgetown, with some friends, when Martin approached her. He pulled a black handgun, pointed it at her demanding she hand over her valuables.
He took her cellular phone and escaped.
Half an hour after that incident he struck again. This time on Water Street, Martin cornered Miguel Sammy and relieved him of $6,400 cash. He tried to run away but alert security guards who were in the area nabbed him.
Martin was handed over to the police who found a toy gun, the stolen cash and cellular phone on him. He was charged and taken before the court. The case was prosecuted by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Innis.
During sentencing, the Magistrate considered that Martin pleaded guilty and saved the court’s time, as well as the fact that a toy gun was used to commit the offences. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment on each charge.
The jail terms will run consecutively.
