A Guyanese man is feared dead after he reportedly tried to flee from a group of Venezuelan criminals, during a botched business deal on the Guyana/Venezuelan border on Monday.
The man, whose name has not been disclosed, reportedly plunged into the Cuyuni River, near Iteringbang to escape his attackers who were firing bullets at him.
His body has not yet been recovered and investigators on the Guyana side of the border are not sure if he was shot or if he drowned.
Kaieteur News understands that the man hails from Joseph Pollydore Street in the city.
Police sources say that from the reports they have received so far, the man went across the border into Venezuela to a place called San Martin.
“We heard that he went over there to do business and was challenged by some Venezuelans. He ran and jump into the Cuyuni River. We don’t know if that is true, but that is what we heard,” a police official told this newspaper.
Kaieteur News also understands that the man’s wife left the city earlier this week to travel to the area after receiving word of the incident.
