DEAR EDITOR,
GT&T would appreciate the opportunity to respond to the Letter to the Editor captioned “Talk is indeed Cheap, GT&T,” penned by Ms. Fraser and published in the August 14th 2014 issue of Kaieteur News.
We offered a comprehensive response to Ms. Fraser before on the issues she raised about our data service. This will be our final contribution to this discourse. While it could be argued that we speak from an admittedly partisan position, the objective reader will recognize and/or observe that our arguments are intelligible. We restrict ourselves to a statement of the facts set out below.
GT&T offers the best mobile voice rates and mobile data plans in Guyana and the greatest freedom and flexibility of any local data service. Our monthly plan offers the customer 600 megabytes of data for a price of G$2299 per month. Our weekly plan offers 240 megabytes of data for G$999 per week. Our daily plan offers 30 megabytes of data for G$199 per day. This means that our in-plan rates for the monthly, weekly and daily plans are G$3.83, G$4.16 and G$33 per megabyte, respectively. These plans can expire in either of two ways: the customer utilizes their entire quota or the plan time runs out, whichever occurs first. We do no data throttling and we charge no overage fees. There are a few customers who would wish to have us provide notification to customers before their data allocation is exhausted. However, as most of our customers are aware, their smart phone allows them to monitor their data usage.
Without attempting to undertake a detailed comparison of the available data plans in Guyana, suffice it to say this: While a monthly data plan on the other network has an in-plan rate of G$1.93 per megabyte, daily usage is capped at 50 megabytes and usage beyond the daily cap attracts an overage fee of G$1,016 per megabyte (i.e. G$1 per kilobyte), which is applied automatically, possibly without the customer being aware, since the amount is deducted directly from their core account balance.
Thus, Ms. Fraser’s comparison of the two data plans amounts to the proverbial comparison of apples and oranges. We have no desire to be critical of the other network’s plans. However, our plans reflect a conscious decision to keep them simple and affordable, two characteristics which are supported by our by our market research and customer feedback.
We value customer feedback and are usually prepared to tweak our service offerings in response to constructive customer observations. However, to our mind, Ms. Fraser attempts to distort what is clearly a superior mobile data service and is decidedly selective in her price comparisons.
