Reports are surfacing that on Saturday August 16, the first day of preparation for the 2014 Caribbean Cup qualifiers, only nine players were present for National Team training out of a list of 30 that was circulated by the Guyana Football Federation.
The nine players, which included two goal-keepers, were then told that training was to be cancelled as a result, a severely embarrassing event that suggests a lack of organisation from the GFF, as no official notice for players to attend training was made.
The National Team, which is now being coached by former player Denzil Thompson, only has one overseas-based player and the proposed training on Saturday did not even account for any players from leading club side Alpha United.
It would appear from recent comments made by GFF President Christopher Matthias on NCN television that his vision of development does not include the use of overseas-based players, despite the Golden Jaguars reaching their highest ever point in World Cup Qualifying by using a team which combined both domestic-based and overseas players.
Many countries in the Caribbean, including Caribbean Cup opponents St Kitts & Nevis, are calling on their best players regardless of where they are based in the world. It seems likely at this point in time that the Golden Jaguars squad for the Caribbean Cup will consist exclusively of young, domestic-based players.
Guyana has three, professional, experienced ‘Golden Jaguars’ in the form of JP Rodrigues, Christopher Nurse and Carl Cort, who all currently play in the USA. It is unclear if any of these players has been formally contacted by the GFF at all this year.
Professional football clubs expect Federations to give them acceptable notice in advance of dates in which International players will leave and return. It is also unclear if young Guyanese star Trayon Bobb, now playing in Europe, has been contacted formally by the GFF at all this year either.
It is a sad state of affairs that within the space of two years, Guyana has gone from a team playing Mexico in front of crowds numbering nearly 100,000, to that of a team unable to gather eleven players for training. With the Caribbean Cup two weeks away, the situation is dire.
