Residents of the Region 9 village of Maruranau are gearing up for competitive action when sports administrators of that community stage the Annual Deep South Rupununi August Games at the Community Centre Ground, August 24-30 next.
Britney Mack, daughter of Osmond Mack presents the winning trophy to Mr. Gary LaRose at his East Street business place yesterday morning.
Six villages will vie for honours in volleyball, football, archery and softball cricket. There will also be many indigenous activities like parakari drinking and fire lighting, an indigenous game common in those communities.
The highlight of activities is the 5K and 10K races which according to organizer, Gary LaRose, provide lots of action. While Maruranau is the overall defending champion, 13 year old, Rose Campion is the defending 5K champion with Clinton Powlin the defending 10K champion. Both will be participating in those events and according to Mr. LaRose, will be hard pressed to retain the accolade since there are many ambitious aspirants that have been preparing for the event.
Like any other activity of this nature the organizers welcome the intervention of members of the corporate community and the administrators of Eyewear Optical of 349 East Street North Cummingsburg, responded positively to a sponsorship request from the organizers and donated the winning trophy along with the advertising banner and a football uniform for Rose Campion.
Yesterday morning, Mr. LaRose, went to Eyewear Optical where he received the sponsorship package from Britney Mack, daughter of Osmond Mack.
Mr. LaRose was grateful for the gift and expressed such sentiments to his benefactor. He said that the businessman has always been receptive to the organizers’ request and has been making similar donations since 2006 when the games had its genesis. Replying, Mr. Mack said that he is delighted to support the activity since it promotes the talent of residents in the interior community even as it finds productive activity for them.
Meanwhile, Mr. LaRose said that as usual, the forum will be a chockfull of fun and activities. He said that the forum serves as a unifying factor among the residents of the community even as they engage in friendly but intense rivalry.
