…almost in garbage dump
Despite pleas by stallholders occupying the northern end of the McKenzie Market, for the removal of an unsightly garbage dump, a well-known businessman has been given permission to erect his ice cream parlour and snackette, about five feet from the refuse.
According to one stallholder, the Town Council does not care about the citizens health.
“De Chairman, staff, and de councillors all doan care. Imagine dem got a sanitation department an’ dem coming fuh tell you that you place unfit to work and look at dis town how dem got it?”
Stray animals and sometimes drug addicts are often seen rummaging through the garbage during the day and night. The adjacent area aback of the market is also used as a toilet during the day and night.
The stench from the garbage dump is of grave concern to the shoemakers, other stallholders at that end of the market, passersby and even people occupying offices in the building close to the market.
One office worker says she is disgusted with the way men expose themselves to the general public.
“Men have no regard as to who is passing. They turn in full view of the public. It is disgusting, very disgusting.”
It is the opinion of many that the erection of the ice cream parlour/ snackette should not be allowed and wonder why this move has been facilitated.
IMC Chairman Orrin Gordon said that the decision was made after three meetings with the Works Committee. Some councillors were of the view that the businessman should be given a spot on the Linden/Georgetown Bus Park, but according to Gordon, they were rejecting other applications for the very park, and so he thought it was not morally right for him to pass this particular application.
However, two other options were given – one on Potaro Road and the other on the Wisroc/Amelia’s Ward Bus Park – and the latter was chosen by the councillors. He claimed after the Town Clerk and team checked and verified it, the plan presented was of a different dimension to the one presented in the meeting, so it was sent back to be corrected.
When asked about the closeness of the dump to the structure, the IMC Chairman was very peeved.
“The Council gave the market vendors twelve bins to throw their garbage and to roll out to the front so we can pick them up every morning – including the Dutchie Boat landing area. The vendors are not interested in their own cleanliness because they continue to throw their garbage in the dump area. We gave the Trade school bins, too, and they bring theirs out, so why can’t the vendors do that? What makes them different to anybody else?”
Mr. Gordon noted that the dump being there is not healthy for any business, whether food, clothes or otherwise, so he will ask the Town Clerk and the same councillors who were very vocal in acquiring the spot, to be proactive and remove the dump, sanitize the area properly and get the vendors to use the provided receptacles.
