Footballer, Sheikh Kamal, who was reportedly busted with marijuana during a football match in Kamarang last week, was granted $150,000 bail when he appeared in court yesterday to respond to a drug trafficking charge.
Kamal of Lot 58 ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown denied the charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
He was charged with having 37 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking last Friday at Kamarang, Upper Mazaruni.
The footballer was represented by Attorney-at-Law Mark Conway who made an application for reasonable bail. Conway explained that the police had conducted a search during a football match where there were about 50 persons present.
The lawyer’s claim was refuted by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Innis who said that although the search was conducted during a football match, Kamal was the only one present where the drug was found.
Innis told the court that Kamal was arrested and taken to the nearest police station. Further investigations led to him being charged for drug trafficking.
Notwithstanding the Prosecution’s application for the footballer to remain in custody, the Magistrate granted him bail. The case is set to be called before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on October 7.
